Following a 12 percent increase in domestic violence cases in 2024, the Denver District Attorney’s Office has split its Family Violence Unit into two specialized teams: the Domestic Violence Unit (DVU) and the Child Victim Unit (CVU).
The DVU will handle all felony cases involving intimate partner violence and currently oversees more than 400 cases. The CVU will focus on felony cases involving victims under 18, such as child abuse and sexual assault.
District Attorney John Walsh said the restructuring allows prosecutors to take a more focused, trauma-informed approach.
Advocates, including State Rep. Monica Duran and leaders at the Rose Andom Center, say the new units show a strong commitment to survivors and may help prevent future domestic violence deaths.
